This paper compares the results of a rapid appraisal that was carried out using Participatpry Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques with a conventional sample survey which were used to establish socio-economic well-being ranks in Njombe District.
This interesting article describes how the author sought to show how an appreciative inquiry technique can be used to embed a self evaluation process in an organisation that caters for the needs of street children in Africa. The paper describes using a narrative style the findings of a three day workshop using this methodology. Appreciative Inquiry works by highlighting the organisations best practice which is then used as a bench mark for all the practitioners to assess their own performance.
This short report written by the Research and Policy Programme on behalf of ACORD examines three different areas of the agency's work in Africa; i) conflict resolution, ii) monitoring and evaluations systems and iii) work on gender. In a workshop that was held in accordance with Birmingham University on the theme of Development in Conflict a number of important issues and decisions emerged in relation to ACORD's continued work in conflict ridden areas.
These notes outline the principles of PRA and potential applications, and discuss a number of PRA methods. For each method it briefly notes what the method can be used to understand and gives a few tips to remember. The methods discussed include time lines, transects, historical transects, mapping, wealth ranking, seasonality diagrams, matrix ranking, Venn diagrams, linkage charts, trend diagrams, and comparative charts. No examples are given.
