Part One: First Assessment, Gamiza Ward, Zambia

The process and the discussions from PRA fieldwork in several villages in one ward in Zambia are documented. For each village, the team members are identified and the structure of the PRA noted. For the first village, Kurimakwakanaka, this took the form of a historical analysis, participatory mapping, agricultural trends analysis, ranking and livelihood analysis which led onto problem identification. In other villages, a range of other methods were used, including transects, seasonality analysis, matrices, cause-effect diagramming of poverty and group feedback sessions.

District Environmental Action Planning: Part One First Assessment, Gambiza Ward, Zimbabwe

Fieldwork report from the communal lands in Chiwundura, Gambiza Ward, Zimbabwe. Experiences of field testing of PRA tools in six villages in the Gambiza Ward are reported. A variety of methods are included ranging from matrix scoring, and mapping exercises to livelihood analysis. A broad picture of the district, incorporating socio-economic, environmental and historical dimensions, is given.

Participatory Interaction in Development (PID)

This discussion paper addresses ways in which SSP - a Sri Lankan NGO which specialises in participatory methodologies - can continue in a sustained way after external funding ends. It discusses the establishment of PID, to operate in a more demand-oriented approach, based on cost-recovery for advisory, training and other services. The strategy for planning and effecting the institutional change is outlined.
