This article discusses what has been learnt by the PIDOW - MYRADA Project regarding the function and role of Self-help Credit Management Groups as basic social groupings responsible for watershed management.
Brief review of the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) experiences of the Community Empowerment Programme (CEP), including both quantitative and qualitative collection of information. A series of workshops which served to deepen various government official's understanding of self-reliant development are described. The impact of an external evaluation are also reflected on and conclusions made regarding the contribution of the M&E to the planning process of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency's long term development programme in the region.
At the Rio Earth summit governments of the world signed up to Agenda 21, an international action plan to promote sustainable development. Local governments agreed to prepare their own local agenda 21 strategies with the involvement of all groups in society, on the basis of consensus. This document is a report of research carried out in the UK, Denmark and The Netherlands to examine the approaches and strategies that have been adopted to ensure this participation. The aim of the report is to promote good practice and innovatory approaches to participation.
