Preliminary comments on a wealth ranking exercise performed with forest user groups from three geographical areas of Nepal
Abstract
The paper explains how wealth ranking was done with three forest user groups, and discusses some of the results of the exercise. The aim was to select participants from the user groups of different socio-economic backgrounds in order to compare how they describe and classify forest and agricultural soils. Three men and three women from each user group carried out the ranking, although the criteria and household lists were discussed by others in the user group. The method used is described in detail. The respondents carried out the exercise independently, and the scores were compared. Common problems encountered included: not all the respondents know all the households, or had the same understanding of the criteria; linking wealth status to ethnic group and underestimating ones own ethnic group. There was inconsistency between the individual rankings which varied from total disagreement to slight variations (detailed results are given in appendices) and it was felt that working in groups or using another method to triangulate information was important.
