Social uses of literacy : a pilot study of existing literacy practices in communities of south Dhading District using ethnogrphic and other qualitative approaches.
Abstract
This document reports on a short pilot study commissioned by the Community Literacy Project, Nepal to provide baseline information on the social uses of literacy in different types of communities of south Dhading district and also to pilot some methods for doing so. Data on existing literacy practices was gathered through photography, social mapping, participant observation of literacy events, semi-structured conversations with local people and collection of 'real' literacy materials.

Abstract
This article reports on research carried out in case study schools from Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka and India, to investigate the use of agriculture as a medium for the development of young learners' basic skills of literacy, numeracy and other life skills. The findings were aimed to provide decision-makers at national and international level with information for future planning and implementation of primary education programmes. PRA methods were used to learn more about the formal environments of primary schools, through facilitating the analysis of the school situation by teachers, pupils and parents.

Learning from experience: the transformation of participatory urban development through community to community exchange
Abstract
A detailed plan to articulate and disseminate experiences in community exchange programmes between low-income urban communities in Asia and Africa. The report highlights the value of community participation and community exchanges in the light of growing urbanization and decentralization of services. The objective of these exchange programmes has been to transform a process of urban development by enabling the poor themselves to be directly involved in planning and negotiating local development strategies that make sense to them and which fit within their existing livelihood struggles. The organisations involved are: Pilotlight in UK, Asian Coalition for Housing Rights based in Thailand, IIED in UK, Society for the Protection of Area Resource Centres in India and People's Dialogue on Land and Shelter in South Africa.

A description of the 'Mala' (necklace) as a self assessment tool helping women to monitor both their own activities as commercial sex workers as well as their role as peer educators. Different activities were recorded using coloured beads strung into necklaces.

Stepping forward : children and young people's participation in the development process
Abstract
This book presents issues and challenges facing those facilitating children's and young people's participation. The contributors come from a wide range of backgrounds including NGOs in development, children's agencies, academic insitutions and governments and provide case studies from the UK, Eastern Europe, asia, Africa, the Carribean and central and north America. Chapter 1 gives and overview to the main issues and concepts and chapters 2-7 each expand on a particular theme. The main issues discussed and analysed include: the ethical dilemmas facing professionals, the process and methods used in partlicipatory research and planning with children, the inter-relationship between culture and children's participation, considerations for instiutions and the key qualities of a participation programme.

Pollards Hill participatory wellbeing needs assessment
Abstract
The Pollards Hill Building Connections Single Regeneration Budget Scheme will run for five years with a budget of ú5 million. It aims to improve access to education, training and employment, develop local enterprise, strengthen healthcare and improve the quality of life in the local community. This needs assessment was carried out as part of the "strengthening health care" theme and focused on residents views of life in Pollards HillI. Involving 550 people across a spectrum of ages, it captured their experiences, thoughts, ideas and suggestions for improving the quality of life for local people.
Reaching the unreached through participatory planning: study of school mapping in Lok Jumbish
Abstract
Lok Jumbish was launched in 1989 to work at a grassroots level, mobilizing support and participation of the rural community in the programme of primary education. By revitalising the existing programme it aims to be more responsive and inclusive of all, and school mapping is considered to be a powerful instrument in the pursuit of these objectives. The purpose of the study is to analyse and understand the way school mapping has been conceptualised and implemented under Lok Jumbish and its relationship with the goal of achieving universal primary education in Rajasthan.
