Alternative perspectives on livelihoods, agriculture and air pollution: agriculture in urban and peri-urban areas in a developing country

This book is based on a synthesis of community perspectives from selected urban and peri-urban villages of Varanasi and Faridabad districts of the Indian states of Uttah Pradesh and Harayana. It approaches the topic of air pollution in a holistic manner considering local lives and livelihoods from the perspectives of local communities, in which impact of air pollution on agriculture has been viewed as part of a whole livelihood system.

Lessons from capacity building at Ha Giang, Vietnam

This short paper describes some lessons learnt during training workshops conducted for capacity building in participatory approaches (PA) at Ha Giang in Vietnam. Two further goals were identified in addition to capacity building. These were to learn ways of influencing the conventional 'top-down' planning, and to learn participatory methodology for community-based planning in areas of both low and high literacy.

Project benefit-matrix impact from the Maldives : a method for participatory evaluation

A discussion of the use of the project benefit-impact matrix and show its use within the context of a project evaluation in the Maldives. The project sought to address the development needs of traditional island communities. A brief account of the process is provided with the group's interpretation of the perceived benefits and impact reflected in a chart. Observations are also made of group dynamics, gender factors and the extent of participation by the group.

A visual method from participatory evaluation at Maldives

A simple, matrix-based technique for group evaluation of a development project, based on its activities. The group uses the matrix to work through listing project activities, scoring impact, detailing the outcome and impact and then discussing sustainability and improvement. In this case the participants are using written cards on the matrix to evaluate a community development project in the Maldives.
