PRA and its complementarities with household survey methodologies.
Download available
Abstract
This article highlights the danger of using quantitative research methods alone, based on the experiences of a research project examining sustainable management of mangroves in El Tamarindo, El Salvador. The important contribution PRA techniques made to the quality of the research and also how they reduced overall project costs are outlined. Moreover, the article describes how the PRA stimulated community action, reactivating the pre-existing Ecological Committee of El Tamarindo and the production of an educational booklet.

Farmer's needs propel change and institutional reform in agricultural extension : an action learning experience from Zimbabwe.
Abstract
This paper describes the evolution of a participatory approach to innovation development and extension within the ConTill project and examines the strategy adopted by the project to scale-up the successful pilot of this approach, through institutionalisation in the agricultural extension department (AGRITEX).
Awareness and commitment to change were achieved through the development of 'learning cases,' the exposure of extension department officers to them, informal networking and joint lobbying. The position of the project as an 'outsider' also enabled the project freedom to interact with all hierarchy levels within AGRITEX, provoking action through acting as an informant.
Once the extension department was convinced of the need for change a means for putting the participatory extension approaches into practice was sought. Operationalisation of participatory approaches was recognised to involve far more than training staff in participatory methods, since not only did the participatory approaches challenge the existing organisational culture but also other factors, such as control-oriented rather than performance - oriented management were not conducive to its adoption. In response to this an organisational development programme was initiated which is outlined in the paper.
Chapati diagramming : an account made to use it in problem solving.
Abstract
This article includes a detailed description of chapati diagramming and case study from India of how it was used by a women's credit and saving group to critically examine their own performance. Three seperate diagrams were made by the women, the first of which looked at performance in terms of participation by members in the building of the capital of the institution, the second at participation in the business of the institution and the third in its management.
Three months after the exercise was carried out the results appeared to be positive in that there was an increase in the regularity and amount of savings and overdue loan installments were recovered.

Classroom observations and participatory learning for action activities : a view to the experiences of girls.
Abstract
A draft copy of a manual which seeks to address some of the factors causing low attendance, performance and participation of girls at school, by providing a means by which those involved in education can analyse interactions in the classroom, examine how instruction is differentiated by gender and identify gender-bounded attitudes and perceptions that influence learning , opportunities and achievement.
The first part of the manual describes techniques which can be used by teachers and inspectors to observe what takes place in the classroom as a basis for discussion and the second part concerns how Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) activities can build on this.
Learning from life : get together.
Abstract
This document reports on how a participatory approach was used at a meeting of various groups to start the Learning for Life Project; a partnership between ODEC and members of the West Indian Day Centre.
One of the participatory tools used of particular interest was the construction by both older and younger members of a timeline of their experiences of racism in Oxford which acted as a starting point to explore key issues and concerns. The report includes an action plan drawn up by the group as a result of the discussions and activities.
Linking government with community resource management : what's working and what's not.
Abstract
This report (based largely on the discussions held at the 5th Asia Forest Network meeting held at Surajkund, India in 1996), synthesises the experiences of community forestry management in the region.
The report begins by outlining the main trends in forest policy in each country.
The elements considered necessary for transition of forest management to local communities are examined, including enabling policies, the need for reorientation of Forestry Agencies and ways of enhancing development support agency programs.
The political and economic factors which undermine community involvement in forest management are considered, including inequities in resource flows whereby national goverenments tend to regard forest regions as resource banks to be used according to state requirements and also problems of delegating authority to the administrative village level which may not reflect interest user groups.
Finally, the strategies and activities planned to be taken in the future are outlined for each participating country.

Exploration of participation : possibilities and limits of a participatory training approach in volunteers' organisation.
Abstract
A study examining a participatory training workshop, subsequent activities and final evaluation with volunteers working for INZET, an NGO which aims to maximise the possibilities for sustainable development in the South through influencing government policy.
The aims of the training were to restimulate the enthusiasm of volunteers, bring them and their work closer to the INZET activities and equip them with the additional skills necessary for their promotional work. The study describes and reflects on the process and examines the effectiveness of the participatory training in achieving its aims.
