Learning from a participatory forestry experience in Bulgaria.
Abstract
This paper provides a brief critical analyisis of a Bulgarian experience in participatory forest management, in which initial PRA planning and local adaptive planning for forest management was not followed up. The lack of an enabling national forest policy for decentralised forest management was a major factor in the 'failure'. However, professional and institutional challenges in partner NGOs were also important, many of which centred around issues of behaviour and attitudes.

Applying PHAST (Participatory Health And Sanitation Transformation) : insights and lessons from Tweerivier, Namaqualand, Northern Cape.
Abstract
This paper documents experiences from Tweerivier, one of the field sites during a training workshop in Participatory Health and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST).
PHAST was used to broaden local debate and understanding on health aspects of water supply and sanitation and to demystify techology and health . A series of participatory exercises were initiated to allow residents to explore for themselves the underlying cause of their contaminated water and to decide which of these they had control over and could change. An experiment was developed during the course of the field work, to test solar water purification techniques as an alternative to boiling and a broad range of sanitation technology choices were also, introduced to the community in such a way as to take control of the information away from technical experts.
Re-evaluating participation and monitoring in extension - lessons from an NGO's experience in Tanzania.
Abstract
Based on an impact study of Concern's agricultural and community development projects in Iringa region this paper shows how the claims frequently made for participation in development projects need qualifying. The authors argue that some of the grandiose claims made for the need for participation are unhelpful. Extension can be vastly improved simply by encouraging field staff to listen more closely to farmers whilst exaggerated claims act to confuse the process of working out what exactly is needed in each specicfic case and why.
Farmer's participation in agricultural research and extension : Lessons from the last decade.
Abstract
This article is a conceptual review of a decade of work on Farmer Participation in Research and Extension (FPR/E). Though FPR/E does have an important role, it has generated over-optimistic expectations. This is caused by lack of clarity in the objectives of different kinds of participation; the way participatory approaches relate to other modes of client orientation; and the various roles of different organizations in promoting participation. A major unresolved issue is the need to complement depth of participation with breadth of coverage. Inter-agency collaboration may hold some, but not all the solutions to this dilemma.
