Rapid Rural Appraisal: Forbes Shire - Initial Report

Abstract

This report describes an exploratory RRA conducted in Forbes Shire, NSW, Australia. Producers were interviewed and the information analysed by a multidisciplinary team. The report includes descriptions of the farming systems in the area; a discussion of problems identified; some general recommendations for action available to the research institute which carried out the survey; and a recommendation to set up a collaborative on-farm research programme.

University Education for Multiple-goal Agriculture in Australia

Abstract

This article questions the purpose of agricultural education: what qualities should graduates have? It also advocates greater client orientation and project -based learning. The emerging farming systems perspective and issues of sustainability and concern with human goals are discussed. It is suggested that debate on the goals and processes of agricultural education and agriculture itself should give rise to changes in university teaching and learning. The article is based on experience of, and directed towards, agriculture and agricultural education in Australia.

Abstract

The proceedings of a workshop focussing on three topics: rigour and integrity in PRA work, PRA training quality and funding and related pressures for compromises.
Annex 2 provides a case study of the community consultation methodology used by the Groundwork Trust in the community of Gellidog. Annex 3 outlines the Teenage Sexual Health Research Project being carried out in Wester Hailes using a participatory methodology. Finally there is an updated list of the PA network in Scotland.

Learning from life : get together.

Abstract

This document reports on how a participatory approach was used at a meeting of various groups to start the Learning for Life Project; a partnership between ODEC and members of the West Indian Day Centre.
One of the participatory tools used of particular interest was the construction by both older and younger members of a timeline of their experiences of racism in Oxford which acted as a starting point to explore key issues and concerns. The report includes an action plan drawn up by the group as a result of the discussions and activities.

Abstract

A study examining a participatory training workshop, subsequent activities and final evaluation with volunteers working for INZET, an NGO which aims to maximise the possibilities for sustainable development in the South through influencing government policy.
The aims of the training were to restimulate the enthusiasm of volunteers, bring them and their work closer to the INZET activities and equip them with the additional skills necessary for their promotional work. The study describes and reflects on the process and examines the effectiveness of the participatory training in achieving its aims.

Hands on : using PLA approaches in the UK.

Abstract

Summary of a one-day workshop for PLA practioners organised by the charities evaluation services and Oxfam UK and Ireland.
A case study of the use of PLA by North Derbyshire Community Health Service is given and also issues and techniques relating to the use of interviews are considered, including suggested guidelines for interviewers, the use of local people to gather data, interviewing skills, the use of group exercises vs. individual interviews. Finally, a team interviewing and diagramming exercise used at the workshop is outlined.

A pack comprised of : Discussion Leaflets analysing key issues surrounding poverty, Fact Sheets on fundamental rights, vulnerable people and places and Action Sheets providing a sample of ideas on aspects of organising for action and information on further resources.
Discussion Leaflet 3, "Participation & Partnership", might be of particular interest to those concerned with participation. The meaning of participation is discussed and six elements crucial to ensuring participation and partnership are outlined.

Challenging 'community' definitions in sustainable natural resource management : the case of wild mushroom harvesting in the USA

Abstract

In the light of the growing trend towards devolving natural resource management to local communities this paper argues that there is need for care to be taken in defining the community.
The need to think beyond residential proximity as the criteria for community is examined, especially with regards to non-equilibrium natural resources, where spatial and temporal distribution of the resource varies and transhumance strategies are commonly adopted. A case study of wild mushroom harvesting in the Pacific North West of the USA illustrates the importance of not overlooking the role played by external stakeholders whose livlihoods can be significantly affected by decisions regarding the use of the natural resource in question.
Finally, the authors offer suggestions on how an environment conducive to sustainable and profitable harvesting of non-equilibrium natural resources can be encouraged at different levels.
