An overview of the life and work of Paulo Freire. Some of the key concepts he developed that are significant to both PRA and REFLECT are outlined.
Summary report of a community health needs assessment carried out in five communities in Ethiopia. Government health staff and community members were involved in identifying and prioritising maternal and child health problems and planning for actions to help solve them. A limited number of maternal and child health behaviours that are critical to the prevention and management of the most important causes of childhood morbidtiy and mortality were used as a focus to guide planning. An integrated household survey was then used to measure the indicators of those behaviours.
A participatory learning and action training that challenged the usual mechanical ways of doing training, the article gives advice on venue, expectations, planning, accomodation, application of training learning and time. Also included are some voices from training participants.
This article describes the logic, structure and mechanics of a participatory monitoring and evaluation system designed for group-based savings and credit programs and provides illustrations to highlight certain key elements. Preliminary results of field tests are also discussed. In the system the participant community not only collect data but also analyse, act upon it and 'own' the data. Report of an experimental methodology used to evaluate the impact, in terms of concrete changes to people's lives, of eight small IAF funded projects. Cost/benefit analysis was applied to a wide range of project impacts, such as the added convenience and savings in time that expansion of services to isolated communities can bring to families. Questions of organizational development were also included in the evaluation and levels of participation, the locus of internal decision-making, flexibility, demonstration of effect and the influence an innovative project can have on government policy at various levels, all taken into account.
At the Rio Earth summit governments of the world signed up to Agenda 21, an international action plan to promote sustainable development. Local governments agreed to prepare their own local agenda 21 strategies with the involvement of all groups in society, on the basis of consensus.
