Participation and Consultative skills for project monitoring and evaluation
Abstract
Course notes for a workshop, this paper examines the concepts of monitoring, evaluation and participation and identifies the main components of the process. Identifying stakeholders and indicators and personal attitudes and behaviour are initial starting points, followed by sections on defining objectives of PM&E, checking the relevance of the project to the stakeholders, planning new activities, reporting findings and negotiating change. The notes end with some techiques and tools for consultation.
Myth of Community : gender issues in participatory development
Abstract
The widespread uptake of participatory approaches has created a need to assess more critically if the work is benefitting women and men equally. Community differences are simplified, power relationships poorly understood and conflicts avoided or ignored. The contributors to this book provide an overview of issues and lessons, theoretical reflections, practical experiences and examples of how organizations are attempting to integrate gender into the participatory process.

Abstract
This paper outlines how PRA can be of value to the policy making process by drawing on practical examples from around the world. The paper argues that not only is PRA important in providing poor people with a voice but that it can also challenge the perceptions, behaviours and attitudes of those in authority. The paper warns of the dangers of rapid scaling up of PRA.
