Change the Change Agent

This paper looks at participatory management as a basis for bringing about behavioural changes both at the individual and organisational level. The paper draws heavily on various theories of human behaviour, organisational management and their impact in shaping individual behaviour. The paper presents a review of dominant organisation behaviour models and the key events taking place in business management which have relevance to participatory development in general and to development workers in particular.

Win-Win Trainings

Unlike the conventional methods of information collection in which outsiders are the immediate major gainers, this brief note describes how PRA can reverse this tradition and enable the villagers to gain from information sharing. Two examples from India - Panahpur, Utter Pradesh and ActionAid Karnataka - have been presented. Local people were used as PRA trainers (after receiving trainers' training from outside experts) and the informal village organisations took the responsibility of organising PRA training for outsiders.

Fodder Preference Ranking by Farmers of Kistagiri Village, District Mehboob Nagar, Andhra Pradesh

This paper describes a fodder ranking exercise which was carried out during a situation analysis of Kistagiri village in Andhra Pradesh. The aim of the exercise was to gain an understanding of the decision-making process of farmers in selecting fodder for cattle. The farmers selected their own criteria for evaluating the different types of fodder used, and identified two preferred types.

Jagalur: a Feasibility Report for an Anti-Poverty Project

This long and detailed study describes how the mandal (administrative area) of Devikere in Jagalar, Karnataka State was selected as the appropriate site for an Action Aid anti-poverty project. A socio-economic survey was conducted by a multi-disciplinary team using mainly RRA techniques. The methodology employed appears to have much in common with farming systems research. A section of the report is devoted to health issues. This includes: nutrition and food availability; mother and child wellbeing, health practices and beliefs; the environment; housing; occupation and health services.

PRA in Malda District, West Bengal: Report of a Training Workshop for ActionAid India and Tagore Society for Rural Development

A detailed account of a five day training course in PRA for NGO staff working on a project in West Bengal. After a day's introduction to PRA techniques, the field work in Kharamdanga village began: descriptions of each day's activities are given, with methodology used and findings. Time line, social map, transect and resource map are illustrated visually. The report concludes with a list of PRA methods found useful to the NGOs involved.

This is a write up of a situational analysis using participatory rural appraisal methods, carried out in Kistagiri village, Andhra Pradesh, India. The objective of the analysis was to gain an understanding of the decision-making process of farmers in the matter of fodder selection for large cattle.
