Getting the right end of the stick : participatory monitoring and evaluation experiences in rural Zambia
Abstract
Paper from Care Zambia introducing the Learning Organisation, which thrives on change; encourages experimentation; communicates success and failure; facilitates learning from the surrounding environment and from staff; rewards learning; and promotes caring. A case study of the Livingstone Food Security Project describes a framework for facilitating learning at a project level and discusses the challenges of a community self-monitoring system.

Abstract
This paper reviews the learning process that the project 'Conservation Tillage for Sustainable Crop Production Systems' in Zimbabwe went through with regard to gender issues in research/ technology development and extension. The factors which made the project adopt a gender perspective, the methodology applied and the impact which was achieved are described.
The paper concludes that promotion of gender as an isolated theme or component can be counterproductive and that it should be an integral element of any project.

Abstract
A report of a one day workshop held in Maputo for practitioners, partners and beneficiaries of the Mozambique Participatory Poverty Assessment (PPA). The report examines three themes: process, utility and institutionalisation.
The PPA process and methodological issues of qualitative data collection, institutional partnerships and PPA implementation are discussed under process. Utility of the PPA is looked at in terms of the value added of participatory and qualitative approaches and the issue of institutionalisation includes options for increasing the application and impact of the PPA as a functional tool for poverty alleviation activities.
