Abstract

Community based research encompasses action research, feminist research and other forms of participatory research all based on the belief that everybody has a vital role to play in producing new knowledge and where citizens contribute significant time and effort in investigation. Such research often involves collaboration between community members and 'experts'. In this reader contributions from academics from disparate scholarly disciplines and also from grassroots activists, provide a conceptual introduction to this form of research and also case studies of their application.

Abstract

There is a growing trend in most countries in the south to encourage rural communities to manage their water supply systems. This paper is based on an action research programme designed to draw lessons from twenty four projects representing various types of water supply systems and service levels chosen from a range of environmental, socio-economic and cultural conditions.

Abstract

As a part of a research project, farmers involved in a project using a "participatory " approach and those from a project adopting a more "top-down" approach to developing soil and water conservation measures visited each others project sites during a farmers workshop. Observations from the farmers arising from the visit confirmed a positive relationship betwen a participatory planing and implementation approach and a sustainable project impact. The authors suggest that farmers workshops of this type are useful evaluation tools and should be incorporated into ongoing project activities to enable incorporation of suggestions arising.

Abstract

'Participation' is very much in vogue and currently used to cover a wide range of practice. This paper critically examines how the term 'participation' is used. To avoid the term becoming meaningless, the author argues the importance of being specific about what is intended and what is being done when using the term to describe or define a particular piece of social, community, youth or development work. A list of variables by which participation can be defined are provided.

Abstract

There has been a recent growth in interest in participation. This paper examines the different forms of participation and argues that some of these do not lead to new ways of learning about the world and thus will not lead to sustainable agriculture. A new professionalism is required whereby professionals are more multi-disciplinary, more open to selecting methodologies to suit their needs from other disciplines and where proofessionals are prepared to work with those from other disciplines well as a wide range of non-scientific people.

Abstract

Too often participation of project beneficiaries has been limited to the implementation stages of projects. Involvement of stakeholders at the planning stage is crucial. Based on a case study from the Himalayas, this paper analyses the differences in perception of needs/ problem areas between planners and the people, highlighting in particular the issue of gender.

Abstract

In South Bihar and Orissa in India indigenous village groups have protected their common lands for several decades. The conditions under which these institutions evolved and the reasons for their success are outlined. Some of the challenges the Forest Department will face in nurturing autonomous people's institutions, through the Joint Forest Management process currently being promoted, are highlighted.

Abstract

With the movement towards increased emphasis on participation of poor stakeholders at all stages of the programme cycle, qualitative tools of social enquiry and in particular PRA, are increasingly being used. This paper argues for a middle path whereby both qualitative and quantitative methods are incorporated in evaluations. Suggestions are made as to how this can be done in practice.

Abstract

Of particular interest in this review maybe a chapter on the development and application of new social science methodologies by some of the community forestry programmes. Examples of the ways in which participatory research methods and specifically PRA have been used are given. The use of Process Documentation, a research methods for institutional change, is also described briefly.

Abstract

PRA and in particular REFLECT methods, can be used to make 'children's participation' a reality. This paper provides practical ideas on how PRA methods can recognise children as active participants in development and provide children with self-confidence. Additionally, the author argues for PRA as a lobbying tool for making formal primary schools more child centred and also for enabling parent involvement in school management.
