Natural resources decision making : beyond the land care paradox.
Abstract
This paper examines the landcare movement in Australia and argues that in spite of the undoubted success in terms of mobilising community activity and in raising public awareness, there has been a failure to make a significant difference to the problem of natural resource degradation This is seen as a consequence of a lack of support from government and the wider public and it is argued that expecting rural communities to take responsibility for land conservation without commensurate resources to deal with it is exploitative rather than empowering. Hence, the author argues that greater public participation in the political process is required, whereby citizens and communities take a more active role in the policy making which affects them.

Land literacy and other new approaches to inquiry and learning for sustainability.

These initiatives are expanding the range and nature of stakeholder participation and in doing so making the distinction between extension and research redundant.

Valuing the hidden harvest : methodological approaches for local-level economic analysis of wild resources.
Abstract
This paper is based on case studies from Zimbabwe, Botswana, Brazil, Nigeria and Papua New Guinea, in which an attempt was made to value species not incorporated in formal economic calculations. The studies were carried out by combining economic approaches for resource valuation or for incentives for resource management, with participatory research techniques, based largely on RRA and PRA. The two traditions are summarised and the way in which they can be combined explored, with reflections on some of the challenges encountered.
