From a study sketching the broad dimensions of participation, the chapter on evaluating participation argues that participation must be evaluated continuously as part of project process and that measurement can only be qualitative and therefore unpredictable.
Review of nine DFID participatory technology development (PTD) projects. Three thematic areas are considered: farmer participation, participation by other stakeholders and participation within a multidisciplinary team.
This article begins with a brief discussion of the links between the concepts of participation and social exclusion. Brief histories of three government programmes in the United States which have attempted to use participation to address poverty and social exclusion are then given. Themes emerging from these histories are outlined and their possible relevance for the South, as participation is increasingly used as an institutonalised strategy for addressing poverty.

This paper outlines how PRA can be of value to the policy making process by drawing on practical examples from around the world. The paper argues that not only is PRA important in providing poor people with a voice but that it can also challenge the perceptions, behaviours and attitudes of those in authority. The paper warns of the dangers of rapid scaling up of PRA.
