Sustaining participation: what are the challenges? A review of the Uganda Participatory Development Network (UPDNet) annual meeting, 24-25th August 2000

The Uganda Participatory Development Network (UPDNet) is a loose network of organisations, institutions and individuals who are interested in promoting the use of participatory development techniques in Uganda. This article reviews a recent UPDNet workshop held in August 2000, where members met to discuss the issues and challenges of sustaining a participatory process. It provides a summary of the key issues and thoughts that emerged from the workshop, including best practice for sustaining participation, defining and understanding participation, and networking and forging alliances. Some controversial issues that were discussed are also highlighted.
