Learning participation: the case of PROSODE, Peru

Publication year:
2003

This paper is about a Social Outreach of Law course (Proyeccion Social del Derecho û PROSODE) at the Law Faculty of the Catholic University in Peru. The course has two objectives: to help poor people access to justice, and to involve students in a different perspective of law - as a service for the people. The paper describes PROSODE's work, focusing on the second objective. It details the programmes and its methodology. It includes reflection on what worked for PROSODE and what didn't and has a discussion of behaviour and attitudes. The paper outlines some of the activities and approaches that helped the organisation to create the internal change it felt its students would benefit from. These included university links to the community, and students and teachers working in teams. It concludes by drawing on some of the lessons learnt through these experiences.
