This paper presents ideas about developing new media for visual two-way communication and documentation and how these ideas could give local people a chance to participate. This is mainly looked at in the context of the Rural Integrated Project Support (RIPS) programme in Tanzania. The opportunity lies in combining PRA "software" - it's attitudes, culture of sharing and is visual tools - with new mutimedia hardware for the production and presentation of video reports directly in the field.

Maasai men record a film stating that local residents are best equipped to undertake environmental conservation. International bodies and conservation authorities try to stop distribution of the video, because their report tells a story different to that told by the Maasai. They try to discredit the video. The article concludes that project coalitions can use video to get involved in local processes of negotiation.
