This article shows the limitations of conventional Information, Education and Communication (IEC) strategies in working to prevent HIV infection. By offering varied examples from the field, the authors show how participatory approaches enhance analysis and action. They also argue that the concept of vulnerability is central to HIV prevention and stress the need to go beyond individual behavioural change in addressing HIV related vulnerabilities in communities

Promoting farmer innovation : harnessing local environmental knowledge in East Africa

This book arose out of a workshop held in 1999 as part of a programme entitled "Promoting Farmer Innovation in Rainfed Agriculture" (PFI), which was developed by UNDP and piloted in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The book is a joint effort of all those who attended and participated in the workshop and it seeks to examine the lessons of the programme so far.

A look at how PRA can be used in a conflict situation in a national park to deal with sensitive information on illegal park exploitation. The authors discuss how the information generated through PRA had to be used carefully and sensitively given its potential to disrupt the ongoing dialogue with stakeholders.
