Some Thoughts on the Place of Field Work in Agrarian Studies

This paper, written in the late 1970s, seeks to explain why field work is so important in agrarian studies. The main contribution of field work is to facilitate an understanding of the real agrarian situation. It should be interdisciplinary; it can be a corrective for official attitudes; it can make key contributions to the correct formulation of problems.
