Semi-structured Interviewing

Publication year:
1991

Semi-structured interviewing (SSI) is guided interviewing where only the topics are predetermined, and questions arise during the interview. Using a guide or checklist, the multidisciplinary team poses open-ended questions and probes topics as they arise. New avenues of questioning are pursued as the interview develops. This handbook introduces interviewing as a research method (ch. 1), and discusses the requirements for good interviewing (chs.2-8: selecting informants and sampling techniques; preparing teams, checklists and context; sensitive behaviour; style of conversation and questioning; quantitative data in SSIs; avoiding errors and biases; types of interview). The final chapter gives tips for training in SSI. Throughout this readable book are examples drawn from experiences in many countries and relating to different topics. The executive summary at the beginning gives 10 tips for good interviewing.

Interest groups:
This guide will be of interest to those undertaking interviews, whether as part of research or not. It is particularly useful for those giving training in SSI.
