PRA in education

This report documents the proceedings of the thematic module on PRA in Education, part of the first International Thematic PRA Training workshop conducted by PRAXIS (Institute for Participatory Practices) at Ranchi, India. The workshop went on from 12th-22nd of April 1998, and included fieldwork session conducted in the rural areas of Bihar. The workshop dealt with basics of PRA, introducing tools and techniques; PRA for attitudinal and motivational change, in general and specifically how PRA can be used for motivating parents to educate their children; PRA in monitoring, research and evaluation; experience sharing looking at case studies and discussing how to promote PRA to governments; community mobilisation, specifically examining how to involve youth, girls and marginalised people; and PRA in teaching, on participatory teaching and learning processes in different levels of education. Some of the participatory methods treated are wealth/well-being ranking, transect walks and social mapping. Other participatory techniques were also treated briefly. The report does not provide any overview or conclusions, but gives detailed day to day account of the proceedings and the PRA topics and techniques discussed.
