Photographing Literacy Practices in Kathmandu

Publication year:
1991

The author took photographs of various ways in which literacy was evident in Kathmandu (eg people standing around a street seller reading the newspapers on the ground). He uses the photographs to stimulate discussion amongst Nepali seminar participants on literacy practices - the differences between men and women, rural and urban settings. The photographs showed the importance of starting from the specific - that Kathmandu has "apparent literacy even though the country has the lowest levels of literacy in the world".
