The participatory multipurpose watershed project : nature's salvation or Schumacher's nightmare?

This paper examines and critiques the current global movement towards participatory watershed research and management and asks why emphasis is being placed on working at the level of watersheds and on participation.
The paper suggests that there is little evidence existing that participatory watershed management is a viable approach and that there are major conceptual and implementation challenges involved in this approach. Finally, recommendations for addressing some of these challenges are made
