A participatory approach to assessing the impact of a commuity-based animal health project with Maasai communities in Tanzania

This article describes a participatory impact assessment that was conducted by VetAid in Tanzania. The aim of the impact assessment was to enable livestock keepers to describe the positive and negative impacts of the project on their livelihoods, and to identify indicators and a framework for monitoring future impact. The lessons learnt were: The assessment proved useful for identifying indicators for future impact monitoring and assessment; It was shown how a previously unknown disease had become a serious problem; Important aspects to consider while applying PRA methods were language, the role of women, culture and community description of diseases.
