This book records the authorÆs own account of learning as an organiser. It is a narrative journey of an activist who learned lessons from a series of actions spread across two decades, working to promote the rights of poor, landless and tribal people in the region of Mumbai in India. He understands the basis of organising as the power of the people once they grasp that they donÆt have to be poor and abused, that they can take action and improve their way of life. This book contributes to mobilise the latent anger against the self-denigration that pervades the traditional, deferential society of rural India. The book gives a rights-based perspective and practical tips on why the marginalised remain marginalised; how to organise and over come the forces that bind marginalised people; strategic planning, innovative tactics and campaign methods; negotiating successfully on behalf of the marginalised; working with democratic institutions; managing, scaling-up and sustaining organisations of social change; and teaming up of NGOs and peopleÆs organisations.
