The first section of this paper reviews the changing development trends over the last few decades, focusing on the shift towards peoples participation and community driven action. New methodologies have been developed to enhance participation, although the concept of participation itself is not a new one. In terms of PRA, the emphasis is placed on principals, which are in danger of being overwhelmed by the emphasis on techniques. Behaviour and attitudes is also crucial, and there is concern that the rapid spread has diminished the quality of PRA work conducted. The distinction between RRA and PRA is being blurred by those who practice RRA under the title of PRA. Considering gender and equity is essential, as is dealing with dominance and insensitivity.
