Work with Anti AIDS clubs at schools in East Hararghe did not lead to the anticipated widespread adoption of behaviours to protect against HIV infection. As a result of this, Save the Children carried out some community based research to provide a basis for planning and programme development. This report details the findings of the research, carried out using focus group discussions and informal interviews to examine, in particular the reasons why young people in the area are vulnerable to the spread of HIV and also why children are vulnerable to the impact of AIDS on their families. Results of the research were analysed by participants at two stakeholder workshops leading to recommendations for assistance to communities and the basis of a proposal.
