Rapid appraisal of tree and land tenure

A common cause of failure in community forestry projects is a lack of understanding of rights relates to land and tress. This paper reviews a publication which systematically examines site-specific systems of tenure in land and trees. The methodology used builds on RRA, to examine three types of tenure: holdings, commons and forest reserves. It looks, from the point of view of the household, at the opportunities for tree planting and use under each tenure system. RRA is time constrained, but can be used to point to tenure problems/opportunities.
