Listening to young voices: facilitating participatory appraisals on reproductive health with adolescents

In a detailed report about the Partnership for Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (PALS) in Zambia, implemented by CARE International, the authors look at applying participatory learning and action techniques in working with young people. In the context of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic, the report looks at how the PALS program is a creative response to address the reproductive health needs of young people.

Embracing participation in development: wisdom from the field

This manual draws on CARE's field experience in working with communities using participatory approaches. Part One uses case studies from countries such as Bangladesh, Madagascar, Somalia and Peru to review and critique CARE's experience with participatory approaches. Part Two focuses on conceptual reflections, which include looking at participation and the project cycle as well as using quantitative surveys to complement PLA findings.

Methodology guide : consultations with the poor

A guide intended for country teams carrying out the Consultations with the Poor study for the World Development Report 2000/1. Section 2 gives the background to the study. Sections 3 & 4 describe the process and the time frame for the study. the main issues being explored are listed in 5 and a checklist of issues and analysis methods are given in 6. the field methodology is detiled in 7 and preparation for fieldwork in 8. Section 9 describes the fieldwork process and 10 give notes on deocumentation, synthesis and reporting formats.

Waking up to power, conflict and process

This introductory chapter argues that many participatory development intiatives do not deal well with the complexity of community differences, including age, economic, religious, caste, ethnic and, in particular, gender. The fields of participatory development and gender have remained far apart, both in theory and practice, despite their shared goals of social inclusion and societal transformation.

Training Workshop on Participatory Appraisal Methods for Participatory Assessment of Urban Poverty and Violence in Jamaica, 12-22 September, 1995

This document describes, in detail, the processes and the outcomes of a training workshop on participatory appraisal methods, the main objective of which was to develop a methodology for the study of urban poverty and violence in Jamaica. The training workshop, which was participated in by over a dozen people including the Bank staff, was carried out in three phases: an introduction to the methodology in classroom sessions, pilot fieldwork and review, and the planning for the main fieldwork .

Participatory Monitoring: Some Reflections

This brief paper argues that a participatory monitoring (PM) system is meaningful and effective only when people are involved right from the inception of the project, given a free hand in setting their own objectives and monitoring indicators. The outsider should aim at developing the institutional capability of local organisations, instead of overburdening them with data collection to fulfil the monitoring requirements of outsiders.
