Reforestation, Protection Forest and People: PRA in the Planning of an Indonesian Government Project: a Case Study

The Indonesian government has operated a protectionist policy over state forest areas (even where no trees remain), including the migration of people away from the forest area. The focus here is on one forest area, Walomerah in Ngada district, where this protectionist policy applies. PRA was used in an attempt to discuss the interests of the people in and around the forest area. The methods used in the three day PRA included mapping, transects, seasonal calanders, matrix ranking and meetings. These focused on the use of trees and the perceptions of the proposed site for afforestation.
