Kabripathar: PRA the AKRSP Way

Afforestation programmes in Kabripathar, Gujarat, India, failed because locals were not consulted (01). In contrast, AKRSP has been using PRA to understand peopleÆs knowledge (02). This video documents how PRA methods were used in an international workshop held there, and how the methods are integrated into the organisational structure of AKRSPÆs programmes.

Development of PRA in Bharuch District

This paper reports on applications of PRA by Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP India) in Bharuch District. It begins with notes on the use of secondary data in PRA, and the use of checklists of areas for investigation to give the PRA focus. Eight sections describe the uses of various methods, their benefits and limitations, describing how AKRSP's application of the methods has changed over time, generally towards increased participation by villagers.

Programme and Background Papers for Workshop on PRAP

These papers discuss the experience of the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP India) with participatory rural appraisal and planning (PRAP). The first contribution documents the adoption of RRA by AKRSP in 1988 and its subsequent applications by staff to a variety of topics. Since then, experience has led to shortening and intensification of RRA contacts with villagers and increasing involvement of villagers as team members. PRAP has become related to the production of village action plans.

Economic/Income Classification

This paper reports a wealth ranking exercise, carried out with two locally influential key informants and with a group of marginal farmers in an Ismaili village in India. The criteria were chosen by the local participants. The two interviews resulted in complementary information. The criteria listed were: health of family members, education of children, asset ownership, credit worthiness, bank balance, land ownership, part time employment, number of dependants, and size of house.
